The goal of “carbon neutrality”, zero net greenhouse gas emissions, by 2050 has been declared by more than 120 countries around the world, and political measures towards decarbonization have been proposed in each country. To achieve decarbonization, it is expected that industrial frameworks and technologies in fields including automotive, shipbuilding, aerospace, construction, infrastructure, carbon recycling will have to be fundamentally reconsidered, alongside the energy revolution associated with hydrogen energy, renewable energy and nuclear energy. Therefore, industry is expected to undergo major changes in the future. Welding and joining technologies, which are essential in manufacturing industries, need to join the tide of the times and metamorphose into new technologies amenable to attaining carbon neutrality. This presents a great opportunity for innovation in welding and joining technologies.

For the speedy and smooth development of technologies required to achieve carbon neutrality, active discussions and information exchanges are necessary throughout the world. As one such opportunity, the Japan Institute of Welding will host the IIW International Conference on Welding and Joining in Tokyo on 17-18 July 2022. The central theme of the conference is “Innovative Welding and Joining Technologies to achieve Carbon Neutrality and promote Sustainable Development”. The conference in Tokyo will be a historic and innovative event that leads the 75th IIW Annual Assembly in the week following the Japan International Welding Show (JIWS) 2022. The conference is scheduled for two days, Sunday 17th and Monday 18th. Furthermore, a panel discussion will take place on Monday 18th between the International Conference (IC) and the Technical Working Units (WUs) of IIW, connecting the two more smoothly and powerfully than ever before. After the panel discussion, all participants will be invited to a Japanese Evening event in conjunction with the “IC-WUs Exchange Reception”.

This new style International Conference will provide Hot topics, an Open community, a Transparent program, Easy access and Lively discussion. Participants will be exposed to leading-edge technologies and research in welding and joining at the new style IC linked to the JIWS 2022 before deepening their knowledge at the WUs in the Annual Assembly.

The conference organizing committee will decide on the acceptance of presentations as oral or poster; however, authors will be able to indicate their preference when submitting their abstracts. Keynote speakers with knowledge and experience of these topics or the latest in welding and joining technologies will present in plenary sessions.

Chairman of the Conference Organizing Committee:
Director and Prof. Manabu Tanaka,
Joining and Welding Research Institute, Osaka University, JAPAN.
